DIGITAL PARTNERS WITH VERSANT TO REACH TELECOMMUNICATIONS CUSTOMERS

Versant Ships Leading ODBMS for Telecommunications on Alpha Platform

Maynard, Mass. - January 11, 1995 - Digital Equipment Corporation and Versant Object Technology Corporation (Versant) today announced a strategic relationship that includes engineering support and joint marketing activities designed to target the telecommunications industry. Versant is the provider of the VERSANT ODBMS, the leading object database management system for multi-user distributed applications; Digital is a world leader in telecommunications solutions. As part of the announcement, Versant announced general availability of its ODBMS on Alpha systems running Digital's UNIX, the DEC OSF/1 operating system.

The VERSANT ODBMS is a high performance, client/server database management system designed to support today's critical applications in markets like telecommunications, utilities, transportation, and corporate MIS. VERSANT eliminates the need for joins and maps data directly into the database. Because of this, VERSANT provides users with levels of concurrency and performance often 10 times that of the fastest relational technology. VERSANT has been named the fastest ODBMS by both the University of Wisconsin and by the British consulting group, ButlerBloor. In addition, VERSANT provides leading support for both C++ and Smalltalk development.

Under the agreement announced today, Digital will continue to provide advanced engineering support to Versant and work with Versant to expand their joint customer base through marketing and sales-related programs. VERSANT for DEC OSF/1 is available from Versant now; VERSANT for Windows NT on Alpha platforms will be available during the first quarter of 1995.

"As the leading supplier of advanced data management solutions among telecommunications and utilities customers, Versant is an important addition to our total enterprise object offering," said Tony Craig, vice president of Worldwide Sales Operations at Digital. "The Versant relationship demonstrates Digital's commitment to partnering with leading software vendors to provide customers with a choice of open client/server solutions."

"Our support for the Alpha AXP platform is helping customers create competitive advantage across a variety of industries," said David Kellogg, vice president of marketing at Versant. "The VERSANT ODBMS provides the features that customers in the client/server environment demand, including sophisticated distribution, high concurrency and performance, and 24 x 7 availability. Our customers can take advantage of higher performance platforms while gaining the benefits of utilizing an object paradigm."

For example, a joint Versant and Digital telecommunications customer is building an application that enables the company to provide its large corporate customers with routing and call handling statistics on a near real-time basis. Versant provides the distributed storage management and the advanced features that are required by this application.
